Preamble:

The CSSEIP, Goa University promotes interdisciplinary research on the varied forms of social marginality and exclusion in India. The aim of CSSEIP is to study the various aspects of social exclusion by creating awareness about the theme in various communities as well as creating a cadre of scholars and activists in the area of social exclusion. The objective is to create ideas and knowledge to facilitate an inclusive society.

Centre is primarily involved in research in the area of exclusion and discrimination experienced by marginalized communities, namely, Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes, Other Backward Castes, religious minorities and other socially excluded groups like physically and mentally disabled, AIDS patients, etc. The Centre has been involving in activities of empowering these groups by providing platform for advocacy and articulating their voices and concerns through organising seminars, workshops, symposia, lectures, etc. on related topics.

Thrust areas:


  • Conceptualizing discrimination, exclusion and inclusion based on caste/ethnicity and religion.
  • Developing understanding of the nature and dynamics of discrimination and exclusion.
  • Contextualizing and problematizing discrimination, exclusion and inclusion.
  • Developing an understanding of discrimination at an empirical level.
  • Formulating policies for protecting the rights of these groups and eradicating the problem of exclusion and discrimination.

Centre has published an anthology entitled Tribal Communities and the Exclusion-Inclusion Debate in India edited by Prof. Ganesha Somayaji, Head, Dept. of Sociology, Goa University (September, 2010).
