Marine Ecology

Prof Chandrashekher Rivonker

Course Coordinator

This course, offered by the School of Ocean Atmospheric Sciences, focuses on marine ecosystems and the processes that govern them. The primary goal is to introduce fundamental concepts related to the marine environment and explore the key processes that regulate these ecosystems.

Throughout the course, we will examine the broader implications of marine ecosystems, particularly in relation to human impact. Additionally, we will familiarize you with the terminology commonly used in the study of marine ecological processes.

We will also provide an overview of both coastal and oceanic ecosystems, delving into variations in biological productivity and the concepts that explain these dynamics. As part of the curriculum, we will explore the deep-sea environment, covering both pelagic and benthic zones.

A significant focus will be placed on the ecological aspects of mangroves and coral reef ecosystems, which are vital components of coastal environments. We hope this course will spark your interest and enhance your understanding of the fundamental principles of marine ecosystems.
