Bridge Course in Mathematical Physics

Dr RajeshKumar Shankar Hyam

Course Coordinator

This Bridge Course in Mathematical Physics (2 credits, 24 lectures) covers essential mathematical concepts to support understanding of physics. It includes five units:

  1. Preliminary Calculus (8 lectures): Differentiation (rules, theorems, and applications) and Integration (various methods, polar coordinates, and applications).
  2. Partial Differentiation (4 lectures): Key topics like partial derivatives, total differentials, Taylor’s theorem, and thermodynamic relations.
  3. Series and Limits (4 lectures): Series summation, convergence, power series, Taylor series, and limit evaluation.
  4. Vector Algebra (4 lectures): Vector operations, equations of lines, planes, and spheres, and reciprocal vectors.
  5. Higher Order Differential Equations (4 lectures): Linear equations with constant/variable coefficients and solving related problems.

The course emphasizes problem-solving to apply mathematical principles to physics problems.
