Thrust areas:

Tissue culture, Electrophysiology, membrane physiology, Lipid biochemistry, Human Genetics, Wetland biology, Environmental Biology and Biodiversity.

 

Eligibility for Admission

M. Sc. In Zoology
Must have passed B. Sc. in Zoology, with 7 units of 100marks each, having a minimum of 40% score.

M.Phil. In Marine Zoology
M. Sc. Degree in Zoology with first class or B+ grade from any recognized university.

PGD in CG & MLT
B.Sc. with Zoology / Microbiology / Biotechnology (6 units / 3 units) with chemistry as a subject upto SYBSc.

Infrastructure/Laboratories:

Major Facilities include Environmental chamber, Animal tissue culture facility, Light microscopy, Freeze microtomy, Electrophysiology, Gas chromatography, Flurospectrophotmetry , Clinical Autoanalyser, Animal House, Coldroom, Lyophiliser, Liquid Nitrogen Plant, Image Analyser and UV - Visible spectrophotometry

Research Activities of the Department

The faculty and research scholars are engaged in research activities in the fields of Animal Tissue Culture pertaining to stem-cells, nerve cell-lines of mollusca and other invertebrates; Electrophysiology of nervous/cardiac tissues, Neurochemistry; Protective roles of fatty acids and lipids from fish or marine bacteria towards inflammatory disorders and growth of animals; Membrane structure and cellular functions during adaptational process; Human Genetics concerning congenital malfunctions; Genetic toxicology/studies withanti-clastogenic, anticancer substances; Biodiversity and Eco-dynamic studies pertaining to zooplankton, ants and beetles of the region, Ornithological studies with respect to freshwater / esturine wetlands and Ecology of monoculture forest plantations.
 
 Placement of Students
A good number of PGs are placed as lecturers/ teachers in Degree colleges, Higher Secondaries and the Schools. A sizeable number find placements as RAs, Research Fellows, Project Assistants or Documentation assistants in National Institutes such as NIO, ICAR Complex, Zonal establishment of Fisheries Survey of India Etc. PGDCGMLTs find placements in Pathology Labs in Govt. and private sectors in the country and abroad.
