The Department of Philosophy at Goa University was initially part of the then Centre for Post-Graduate Instruction and Research of University of Bombay (CPIR-1967). Subsequently, it became one of the constituent departments of Goa University. As Philosophy overarches beyond any specific subject matter as far as it involves systematic investigation into various sources and methodologies of knowledge, the Department of Philosophy at Goa University offers a wide range of courses, both as Core and as Optionals that aim to develop critical awareness in understanding other disciplines and subject matters. The teaching programme in the Department has a blend of classical foundations with contemporary developments and debates. Substantively, moving beyond its disciplinary confines, the Department seeks to promote teaching and research on contemporary issues of interdisciplinary nature through a range of Optional papers. The small classroom size serves advantageous for the learning eco-system.
The Department has a wide array of credit-based courses in Indian and Western Philosophy, Continental and Analytical Philosophy, Metaphysics, Epistemology, Ethics, and Logic. There are various Optional courses offered for students across disciplines for the Master's Programme. Opportunity for student exchange programmes is also available for the students of the Department with reputed Universities abroad. The Department has a very robust research programme for M.Phil. and Ph.D. aspirants and has undertaken various academic events through organising and participating in several seminars, workshops, symposia and lectures on relevant topics.
The thrust of the M.A. programme is on developing a critical acumen with regard to a significant variety of philosophical problems, notions and systems.
