Department of Botany
The Department of Botany was established in June 1990. Apart from regular M.Sc. and Ph. D. degree courses a need based P. G. Diploma course in Applied Plant Sciences is also offered. The department is equipped with Student and Research microscopes with photographic facilities, fluorescence microscope, HPLC, UV-VIS spectrophotometer, Chlorofluorometer, Lyophilizer, Rotary shakers, PCR, Gel documentation system, Tissue culture laboratory, Laminar flow chambers, Digital and film cameras, Fungus culture collection centre, herbarium, Polyhouse, glass house, botanical garden for teaching and research. Department also subscribes front line national and foreign journals in botany. An exclusive computer laboratory with printing and scanning facilities, computers in each laboratory and class room all networked and connected to INTERNET are available. Some courses are offered through moodle (e-learning platform). Regular field trips to Western Ghats, Coastal belts and institutes are conducted for on field experience
Involved in various research activities through sponsored and consultancy projects and collaborative projects (both National and International), thrust areas inlude Biodiversity and taxonomy (Algae, Fungi, Pteridophytes, Angiosperms), Stress physiology, Mycorrhizae, Medicinal plants, Wasteland reclamation, Histochemistry of rice, endemic plants and bioprospecting.
M. Sc.:- B. Sc. Botany with minimum of 40% marks in the qualifying examination Ph. D.:- M. Sc. Botany or other related branches after Faculty Change as per University provisions. Minimum 55% marks in qualifying examination. P. G. Diploma - B. Sc. with Botany as a subject. Placement of students
Students of this Department are placed in various teaching institutes within Goa, National laboratories, Universities abroad and Industries.
Facilities
Glass house and botanic garden to cultivate and maintain medicinal, ornamental and endangered plants and to conduct research under water controlled conditions. Plants tissue culture, herbarium, photosynthesis & productivity measuring system, microscopy, fungus culture collection and research facilities are available. HPLC.
